Why I Made These

A few years ago a client hired me to build their family tree. They had boxes of photographs and four generations of names and dates — and every tool I tried made it harder, not easier. The big-name software buried a simple tree under subscriptions, record databases, and DNA features nobody asked for. The free tools looked like they hadn't been redesigned in fifteen years. All anyone wanted was a clean tree the family could pass around the table and correct with a pen.

So that's what this site is: family tree templates designed with actual care, free for anyone. No account, no watermarks. Everything is formatted for A4 paper, opens in your browser, and prints or saves as PDF in seconds — here's the full story.

If you're just starting out, the Blank Family Tree Template is the easiest place to begin. For serious genealogy research, the 4-Generation Pedigree Chart paired with the Family Group Sheet is the standard combination genealogists use worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these family tree templates really free?

Yes — completely free. No account required, no watermarks, no time limits. Open any template in your browser and print it directly, or use File → Print → Save as PDF. There is nothing to download or install.

What paper size are the templates designed for?

All templates are formatted for A4 paper (210 × 297 mm), which is the standard size in Australian, UK, and most international printers. Portrait templates use standard portrait A4; pedigree charts use A4 landscape. If you are in the United States, the templates will also print on Letter size paper with minor scaling adjustments.

Which family tree template should I start with?

For most people, the Blank Family Tree Template is the best starting point — it is simple, immediately recognisable, and works for both display and school projects. If you are doing serious genealogy research, start with the Pedigree Chart and pair it with a Family Group Sheet for each couple you research.

Can I fill in the templates digitally?

The templates are designed for printing and filling in by hand. However, if you open the template in your browser, some browsers allow you to type directly into the PDF after saving. For fully digital family tree software, you would need a dedicated genealogy application — these templates are specifically for the printable, paper-based approach.

Who makes these templates?

One person — a designer and developer based in Australia. This site started after a client project where every family tree tool turned out to be either bloated or ugly, and I decided the simple printable version deserved to be done properly. The full story is here. If a template doesn't print right or you need a format that doesn't exist yet, email [email protected] and a real person will reply.

Are there templates specifically for Australian genealogy?

Yes. The collection includes several templates built specifically for Australian family history research: an Australian Pedigree Chart with State/Territory fields, an Australian Family History Research Checklist covering BDM registries, Trove, electoral rolls, and military records, and a Convict Ancestry Worksheet for researching transported ancestors. All are free to print with no account required.
